The Institute for Experimental Arts participates in the Vienna Poetry Film Festival 2023 at the Lost & Found History program Host Country Greece – Greek poets arrested!
One of the major highlights of this year’s festival program is the Austrian premiere of Olivier Zuchuat‘s documentary film “Like Stone Lions at the Gateway into Night” (87 min.) It is about the Greek prison island of Makronisos. Between 1947 and 1950, more than 80,000 Greeks were interned in re-education camps on the island of Makronisos (Greece). Among the internees were numerous writers and poets, including Yannis Ritsos and Tassos Livaditis. Afterwards: International panel discussion with the Historian Elisabeth Luif (AT) and the film artists Olivier Zuchuat (CH), Aristarchos Papadaniel (GR), Panagiotis Kountouras (GR), Sissy Doutsiou (GR), moderation Sigrun Höllrigl. The discussion will be about about Greek poets in the camp, culture of remembrance and the Greek Civil War, which claimed many victims and yet was and still is suppressed from the European historical consciousness. Documentaries about arrested Greek poets during Greek civil war and world war 2.
The short film MAUTHAUSEN |The Fugitive by Panagiotis Kountouras and Aristarchos Papadaniel serves as an opener to commemorate the 4700 Greeks in the Concentration Camp Mauthausen. Also interned was the writer Iakovos Kambanellis, who recorded his time in the concentration camp in poems. The short film is based on a poem by Iakovos Kambanellis.
