+the Institute [for Experimental Arts]

Hlín Leifsdóttir & Morton – is a Contemporary Classical / Experimental Electronica / Spoken Word duet featuring Icelandic poet, writer and classical soprano Hlín Leifsdóttir and Morton, aka Whodoes, a musician, composer, and record producer, based in Athens.

Delivered in her ancient mother-tongue Icelandic, Hlín’s existentialist poems revolve around secrets, something that cannot be said plainly or put into words at all, perhaps even something that the subject hides from herself. In three poems the protagonist has literally lost her voice.

Morton possesses the rare gift to reveal such secrets. Combining Contemporary Classical and Electronic Music, he transcends the limits of language. His music invites us beyond the confines of literary translation, giving voice to what remains unsung, making the silence between the lines palpable.

The title Andrými is an Icelandic word with two components: “And” is a multilayered prefix relating to breath, spirit or opposition (equivalent to the English prefix anti-). “Rými” means space. In everyday language, “andrými” means space to breathe; a pause to contemplate. In the context of visual art, it also means “negative space.” The album Andrými celebrates this space to breath and express one’s true spirit, in opposition to the forces of social control, exploitation and robotization of contemporary human life.

Morton (aka Whodoes) is an award-winning Athenian composer and musician of experimental, electronic and film music. He has composed music for theatrical performances, documentaries, dance performances and poetry readings. At the same time, he has participated in recordings and remixes of other artists of his genre and has held concerts in Greece, Germany and England. As Whodoes, he has released four ambient electronica and spoken word records. As part of his continuing collaboration with the poet and director Tasos Sagris, their video poem “The Life We Live Is Not Life Itself” directed by the Australian acclaimed video artist Ian Gibbins was awarded at international film and poetry festivals in the USA, India and Mexico and screened at video poetry festivals in twenty-four countries.

Hlín Leifsdóttir is an award-winning writer, classical singer and multidisciplinary artist from “The Land of Sagas,” where the enjoyment and creation of poetry, once an intrinsic part of life, helped people survive the harsh climate. A descendant of the Viking poet Egill Skallagrímsson who escaped execution in England by reciting a poem, Hlín has been no stranger to the life-saving power of poetry in her own life. In times when the survival of this art is uncertain, she believes in turning to music and film as vehicles of translation to restore the universality of poetry; an art form whose enjoyment should be everyone’s birthright.

For the last three years, Hlín has resided in Athens, Greece, where, in addition to writing, she has sung in concerts, musicals and on television programs, as well as taking an active part in social poetry events.

Hlín’s writing has been published in magazines in most continents and translated into several languages. She has given public musical performances in various countries, as well as engaging in experimental arts.

The Institute for Experimental Arts, established in 2008 in Athens, Greece, is an international cultural organization for creative expression and research in the fields of theater, performance art, digital media, installation, music poetry and art theory including members from Greece, USA, England, Ireland, Tunisia, Iceland and Germany.

Stofnun um tilraunalistir (The Institute for Experimental Arts) var stofnuð árið 2008 í Aþenu. Hún hefur frá upphafi verið alþjóðleg menningarstofnun um skapandi tjáningu og rannsóknir á sviðum leiklistar, gjörningalistar, stafrænna miðla, innsetningarlistar, tónaljóða og listfræða. Á stofnuninni starfa listamenn frá Grikklandi, Bandaríkjunum, Englandi, Írlandi, Túnis,  Íslandi og Þýskalandi.
